Stealing the Show

“Sorry! Sorry!” A mousy-haired woman popped her head out from behind one of the shelves. I hadn’t even known that anyone else was in the shop. “I’ll pay for that.”

“It’s okay. It’s been there for years. I don’t think anyone wanted a musical scrying bowl,” I told her.

In all honesty, I was glad it was finally gone. Every now and then, even though it hadn’t been wound up in forever, it would release a creepy peal of music. Horror movies eat your heart out! Having said that… the sudden musical interludes had only happened since Hemlock had arrived. He may not have opposable thumbs, but I never ceased to be amazed by the mischief he could manage with only his claws and the willpower of the devil. And they said familiars were a reflection of their witch’s personality… I was skeptical.

“I’ll just take some…” The witch looked wildly at the jars behind the counter. “…agrimony,” she decided, before glancing sideways at Bridgette, her eyes wide. Her head snapped back forwards. “Sorry again. I didn’t mean to disturb you,” she muttered, as I measured out some agrimony and asked her if it was enough. She said it was fine in a vague way that made me think she hadn’t come in for that at all. Once she’d paid, she dashed out of the shop and practically sprinted back down the street.

“Do you know who that was?” I asked Bridgette, confused as to why the woman had seemed so nervous. I knew there were those who still suspected Bridgette, but she was hardly going to murder anyone in broad daylight.

“Ally Paulson. Unless I’m much mistaken, she’s the Wormwood Coven’s newest member. Doris Donnelley retired… or was pushed out.” Bridgette shrugged. “Natalia has been recruiting young blood since she took over the coven. I don’t think she likes being questioned by anyone with more experience than her.”

I nodded, privately thinking that Bridgette’s theory seemed to check out, if this was the kind of witch she was recruiting. Ally looked too afraid to say boo to a mouse, let alone question an evil witch like Natalia.

“Thank you again for the tea. Call me when you have a protection charm ready. A money bag would be useful, too. Tell your aunts I said hello. We’ll talk about the tea soon as well.” Bridgette slid a holographic card across the counter towards me.

I accepted it, doing my best to not show my amusement at the highly sparkly image of Bridgette in her younger years that she’d used to advertise her business. It was clear that she was also hoping to advertise other things, too.

“Watch out for Natalia,” I warned, before remembering who I was talking to.

“You’re the one who needs to be careful.” She looked over her glasses at me, giving me another look at those cloudy-sky eyes. “The next curse won’t be so careless. They’re testing your protection. You’ll need all the family help you can get. Don’t be too hasty in suggesting they move out.
